About Us

I’m Monica Bowie, the Founder and CEO of I Work in Tech™.

Growing up, most kids pursue the careers that are presented to them.  For me to be successful meant to be a doctor or lawyer, but it didn’t take long to discover that wasn’t my passion.  One day, I got to do an interview for a local TV station and journalism stole my heart.  Journalism, AKA storytelling, has the power to drastically change someone’s life.  Storytelling lead me to a very successful career as a software sales person for over 12 years.

Fast forward to 2018, I found myself making a transition into marketing, sitting in my MBA class at Georgia Tech presenting on “How Silicon Valley Can Fix Its Diversity Problem!” At the time, it was reported that the top tech companies in Silicon Valley struggled to get above 2% representation for Black Tech workers.

By that time in my career, it was very clear to me that I was far too often one of the only Black women in many of my tech corporate spaces.  Having experienced first hand how lonely that can be, it became my passion to help crack the code on diversity in tech.  Technology has an impact on every aspect of our lives and I believe this is one of the greatest economic opportunities of our time.

I’ve been a leader for Black employee community groups at work for years, but in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, I saw very quickly that my impact should expand beyond the four walls of the place I called “work”. That’s when I Work In Tech™ was born.

Our mission is to help bridge the gap of diversity in tech, by creating awareness to the various ways the tech industry influences everything we do, through the lens of underrepresented communities.  A percentage of every purchase made with I Work In Tech™ will go to a scholarship fund, for students pursuing STEM careers. We are committed to heighten awareness, inspire representation, and create future technologists from underrepresented communities.
